If you’ve never tried the YouVersion Bible app Bible in a Year reading plan, you really should. Don’t get overwhelmed if (WHEN) you get behind. If you love to see things checked off a list, like I do, well, there are boxes to check off in the plan but, if you’re also like me, well #life. I’m currently ”13 Days Missed”. I have found though that God is incredibly adept at making sure you don’t miss what He has for you exactly when you need it. I can miss several days and then on that day I pick it up again whatever that day’s reading holds will speak directly to the situation I’m facing. It’s uncanny and leaves you unable to make any sensible explanation except God. All of that really has nothing to do with the title of this posts. I just wanted to set up what’s been going on and what my reading plan is so you could look in to trying it as well. What happened that is speaking to me today is that I reread a chapter from yesterday. I don’t know why, it’s just what popped up when I opened the plan so I went with it. It’s cool because it gave me a chance to really dwell on a thought I had yesterday while reading that same chapter. It’s Acts chapter 1. Jesus has been crucified and raised. He has visited the apostles and given them instructions to go to the upper room and wait for the Holy Spirit and has ascended to Heaven. Acts 1:14 “They all were continually united in prayer, along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.”. How I have missed this I cannot tell you! Why I thought it was a bunch of old men and only the men I cannot tell you! Mary the MOTHER OF JESUS, who has just seen before her very eyes the horrific torture and death of her Son, is told her Son is not in the tomb, watch Him literally appear in the midst of them all out of no where, RISE UP IN THE SKY FROM THE MOUNT OF OLIVES...Mary the MOTHER OF JESUS is in the UPPER ROOM where the incredible, which has never happened, is about to burst onto the scene in tongues of fire! Mary is in the room and among those who are filled with the rushing, mighty, outpouring of the Holy Spirit! “Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts‬ ‭2:4‬ ‭CSB‬‬. I can’t even contain the emotion! The Mother of Jesus experiences the Holy Spirit AGAIN and in an incredible way! The Holy Spirit came upon her and she conceived Jesus and now after all these years and especially the last few days seeing all she’s seen, experiencing all her heart had experienced, she is filled with the Holy Spirit and speaks another language preaching the Gospel, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, her Son. What’s more the God of the universe prophesied it through the prophet Joel hundreds of years before and Peter quotes it to those who are hearing the Gospel in their own languages “I will even pour out my Spirit on my servants in those days, both men and women and they will prophesy.”‭‭ Acts‬ ‭2:18‬ ‭CSB. If that doesn’t just blow your mind I don’t know what will. God saw that little Virgin girl, knew all that He would do through her, knew the pain and agony she would face watching her Son go through everything BUT God also saw this moment and proclaimed it’s coming. I just LOVE HIM SO MUCH! Mommas, don’t you ever think that God doesn’t see you. Don’t you ever think that He doesn’t have a plan for you. Don’t you ever think your years have been wasted. Don’t you ever think it’s too late or you’ve gone through and been through too much to have an UPPER ROOM experience and share the Gospel in ways you never even dreamed of. Don’t you dare because the God of the Universe is El Roi, the God Who Sees Me!

“Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5

‭‭

Reading this verse made me think of something the Lord showed me a couple of weeks ago. I came across Philippians 2:8

“He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death — even to death on a cross.”

Humility comes by being obedient. It isn't thinking less of yourself or more of yourself. It's thinking of yourself as God sees you but it is also seeking to be obedient to Him out of will, not obligation. When we seek to obey Him because we want to, there is no room for anything but humility. You can't be proud when you are in a posture of submission and obedience.

When you aren’t obedient you are saying you know better or what you want is more important than what God is saying to you or prompting you to do. The root of this thinking is pride. Self above all. The antithesis of pride is humility. The antithesis of obedience is rebellion. Whether you want to admit it or not, when you know the right thing and don’t do it God calls it sin.

“So it is sin to know the good and yet not do it.” James‬ ‭4:17‬.

Purposeful disobedience, even if you don’t want to call it that, is sin and it’s root is in pride.

By being obedient to God we humble ourselves as Christ set the example for us to do. His obedience brought Him to death on a cross. How far are we willing to be obedient?

Being obedient to Him does not only mean His Word. It also means those things he speaks to you, those things you feel He is wanting you to do. When we don’t obey those promptings it’s also disobedience. Say you feel in your heart that you are supposed to say something to someone at the grocery store “Hey, I don’t know you but I just feel like Jesus wants you to know that He loves you.” Maybe something like that and you say no way I don’t want to look like an idiot or no way they will think I’m crazy. If you really read those words again you’ll see self lift itself up over what the Lord is asking you to do.

What looks like self humility or thinking less of self or even fear is actually self preservation which can be a form of pride.

You don’t want to tell them what the Lord is asking you to because YOU and afraid YOU will look stupid and the last thing YOU want is for YOU to look stupid. Do YOU see all those YOUs? I don’t think any of us really realize how much of our decisions are informed by self. We want to think of ourselves as humble but are we? The test is how obedient we are willing to be.

I’m not talking about legalism though I do believe we should strive to live a holy life being empowered by the Holy Spirit to do so to the best of our ability and repenting and receiving grace and mercy WHEN we mess up but I’m talking about those promptings. Those things you know He’s asking you to do but you just can’t bring yourself to it. Maybe it’s giving up something that isn’t good for your health. Maybe it’s taking a break from social media because all that negativity is affecting your attitude. Maybe it’s being more bold in your faith. I don’t know what it might be on any given day but I do not that we aren’t going to inherit the earth if we aren’t humble and we aren’t going to be humble if we aren’t willing to be obedient.

Here’s something else to think about. God says in James 4:6-7 “But He gives greater grace. Therefore he says: God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” So, in order for me to be able to resist the devil I HAVE to first submit to God.

Submission = Obedience = Ability to Resist the Devil.

If you find yourself reading this and thinking ooh man that’s me, I realize that I’m not being obedient in this area or that. It’s totally OK! Because God LOVES when we acknowledge where we are missing the mark, when we repent or turn away and receive His forgiveness, mercy and love and then say YES to Him. He LOVES IT! Even that in itself is an act of obedience.

I want to encourage you today to take a look at your life, I know I am. In what ways am I allowing self to dictate what I’m willing to be obedient about? Do you know that you can also ASK the Lord to help you be more obedient? You can even ask Him to help you to WANT to be obedient. Do you know that He knows every thought you’ve ever thought? Do you know He knows more about your heart than you do? Terrifying and wholly freeing at the same time! Trust Him and know that you don’t have to figure out the how on your own. You can ask for His help in every way. Help to WANT to love Him more. Help to WANT to desire Him more. Help to WANT to read His Word more. Help to WANT to be obedient. When He says He will GIVE you the desires of your heart it doesn’t just mean your wishlist. It can also mean that He will make HIS desires YOUR desires. How amazing is that?

I was reading today in Exodus. I’d already come through the part where Moses and Pharoah and God have their showdown. Bloody rivers, frogs, boils, death. Red Sea Crossing. They are walking and thirsty. He makes bitter waters pure. Now they are hungry and so God promises bread from Heaven. He says to Moses that He will allow this bread to come down and that they are to gather 2 quarts each day for six days during the week. No more no less. Then He says something that I know I have read before but I’ve just never seen it in the Light. He says I will do this to test them to see if they can follow instructions. Wow!

Not to see if they loved him, not to see if they trusted him, not to see how devoted they were to him. Simply to see if they could follow instructions.

Now here’s where the Light flipped for me. I am homeschooling Harley this year for Kindergarten (pray for me 😬🤣). We have our language workbook that is teaching him letter formation, sounds, difference in sizes and placement of objects, all sorts of things. But once in a while, every 10 lessons or so they will have a worksheet that goes something like this:

”We are doing a listening exercise. And today I’m going to give you a set of instructions that you have to follow. I’m only going to read the sentence to you one time. You then proceed to read something like this:

Circle the dog inside the dog house.

Put your finger on the biggest circle.

Circle the blue triangle with the red crayon.”

The point of the exercise is to teach them to listen and subsequently follow the instructions.

When I think about what God said to the Israelites in relation to what I’ve been teaching Harley it is so clear. This is not just applicable to our Salvation but really in a more dynamic and profound way in how we are able to impact the Kingdom for His sake. If we cannot follow instructions we can‘t be effective for Him.

Why do you think it is so hard for us to sit down and have our quiet time? Have you ever really contemplated that? We know we need it but why is it so difficult to make it happen?

I’d like to propose that it may be in part because the enemy knows that when we have our quiet time God will give us some “listening exercises“. He will tell us something, perhaps something to do or say or something He wants us to work on, then it’s our job to follow the instructions. Have we listened correctly to what He said and then are we able then to do what He said?

It‘s so obvious when you see it this way isn’t it? If the enemy can keep us from our quiet time He keeps us from our work for the day, our listening exercise. If he can keep us from the listening exercise, he can keep us from following the instructions. After all, you can’t follow instructions you didn’t hear. That’s why your mind wanders during prayer, that’s why you always get interrupted when you’re trying to have your quiet time. It’s no wonder. He has to cut us off before we get started.

Does this infuriate you like it infuriates me? He’s so clever and so subtle and so ANNOYING! I had to literally scream out in my car one day when I was alone “SHUT UP SATAN!!“. Do you know what he did? He shut up. Do you know why? Because Jesus gave me both power AND authority over him and that means he HAS to do what I say because my words carry the weight of my Father.

I want to encourage you Don’t let the enemy steal your quiet time. Don’t let him steal your listening exercise. Don’t let him steal your opportunity to follow God’s instructions. Why? Because the instructions God gives you are life and breath. They have the power to change someone’s life for eternity. They have the power to heal and restore and do miraculous things...but only if you listen and follow the instructions.
